Brenda Laurel - NeoGaian Interactive

theorist, writer, public speaker, teacher, mentor

Welcome!

Welcome to my archive. I’ll be adding to it from time to time, but this is a good beginning.

In this long life, I’ve worked as an actor and director, a computer game and VR designer and producer, an interaction designer and theorist, an academic, a public speaker, and a tutor and mentor. I’m also a mother and grandmother, a home-maker, an abalone diver, a knitter, a student of spirituality, and a lover of Nature.

An only child, I grew up in Indiana. After 4 years at DePauw University, life took me to Ohio State University for my MFA and PhD in Theatre. It was in Columbus, Ohio that I had my earliest experiences as a computer game designer. In the late 1970s, I migrated to Northern California to follow the dream of designing and producing interactive experiences, first at Atari, then at several other companies, including one that I co-founded, Purple Moon. I had the privilege of working at some wonderful labs as well – Atari Systems Research Lab, the Apple HCI group, Interval Research, and Sun Microsystems Labs. In my second life, I designed, chaired, and served as a professor in graduate programs in Media Design at Art Center College of Design and California College of the Arts.

My daughters spent their childhoods in the woods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where I lived for 40 years. They attended a small country school among the redwoods. Long after the girls had moved out and gotten on with their lives, California fires finally drove my partner and me from our home. We resettled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2020. I love the desert and the red rocks, but forests and oceans still animate my dreams.

In this life, I am nourished by love and landscape, sea and sky. I am enduringly grateful to my family, friends, colleagues, students, and cats. It continues to be a great ride.
