When the discipline of human-computer interaction design emerged in the late 20th century, we understood the ongoing, reciprocal relationships between our dreams and our inventions. But in those heady days we often failed to include Nature in our calculus. Today’s applications and the infrastructures that support them contribute to both climate change and social dysfunction. Nature—including human nature—is a vital constituent of our work. We can no longer limit our range of concern to the individual human and the machine. We must manifest The Good in every way that our work touches the world.
